New TetherMe App For Tethering iPhones

TetherMe, an app that is available with Cydia, allows tethering the iconic iPhone to devices like laptops, computers, netbooks, tablets, other mobile phones and the like. In case your mobile network operator does not let you tether your iPhone, or if it charges you for doing so, then TetherMe can be an ideal option for using tethering for free.

This app has been created by BigBoss. It has been successfully tested on iOS versions from 3.0, all the way up to 4.0.1.

Presently, the TetherMe app only supports USB and Bluetooth tethering. You will be able to link your laptop or PC to your iPhone, via USB or Bluetooth only. You will not be able to convert your iPhone into a wireless router or a WiFi router, to enable other devices to access the internet in its hotspot. There are reports that a new version of the app, that supports such WiFi tethering will be released soon. However, nothing is confirmed yet.

This app is said to allow editing the carrier bundle too. This is where one enables tethering option, MMS option etc. for the phone. However, for the iPhone a signature check is done to restrict the user from accessing these settings. With TetherMe this signature check is said to be bypassed. Since, tethering with TetherMe is similar to enabling native tethering on the iPhone, it has been said that this app can be installed on non-jailbroken iPhones too.

After installation of TetherMe, no icon is created as you would otherwise expect. This app has to be accessed from Settings>General>Network; or using Tethering Toggle with SBSettings.

One of the best reasons to use this app is the cost. The TetherMe price is just $1.99 from the Cydia store. Other tethering apps that are available in the market are much more expensive. For example, take PdaNet, which costs $29 for a license or even the popular MyWi, which is priced at $20 or so. However, one aspect to be considered is that these other apps do offer USB as well as WiFi tethering.

Cheap and effective, TetherMe might soon take over as the most popular iPhone tethering app.
